The Three Valleys of the Atlas: Morocco’s High-Altitude Heart

While the peaks of the High Atlas are famous for their rugged grandeur, the life of the mountains is found in their valleys. The Three Valleys—typically referring to Ourika, Asni, and Sidi Fares (or sometimes Ait Mizane/Imlil) — offer a diverse tapestry of landscapes that can all be explored in a single, transformative day trip from Marrakech.

1. Ourika Valley: The Garden of the Atlas

Ourika is the most famous of the trio, known for its lush riverbanks and the seven waterfalls of Setti Fatma. It serves as a verdant escape where the air is noticeably cooler, and the sound of rushing water is ever-present. Here, you can enjoy "feet-in-the-water" dining, where local cafes place tables directly in the shallow river, serving slow-cooked tagines as the glacial runoff flows past your ankles.

2. Sidi Fares: The Hidden High Road

As you climb higher, the road leads to the more secluded Sidi Fares Valley. This region is a stunning contrast to the green depths of Ourika. At an altitude of nearly 1,800 meters, you’ll find authentic Berber villages built from stone and adobe that seem to grow directly out of the mountainside. The valley is famous for its vast fruit orchards—almonds, apples, and cherries—which explode into white and pink blossoms during the spring.

3. Asni (or Ait Mizane) Valley: The Gateway to Toubkal

The third leg often centers around Asni or the Ait Mizane Valley (home to the village of Imlil). This is the domain of the giants, offering staggering views of Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. On Saturdays, Asni hosts one of the most authentic rural markets in the region, where mountain tribes gather to trade livestock and goods.

The Berber Experience

Beyond the scenery, the Three Valleys are about cultural immersion. Most journeys include a stop at a traditional Berber home for mint tea and freshly baked bread with honey. It’s a chance to witness the "Bled el-Siba" (the land of the mountains) and the enduring hospitality of the Amazigh people.

Program:

Departure from Marrakech at 9 am from your hotel/riad and head to the Atlas Mountains to the beautiful valleys and snow-capped mountain peaks.

You will discover the High Atlas mountains, amidst Berber villages and amazing scenery around Marrakech. See the Ourika Valley, Setti Fatma, where you can take a short hike to the Waterfalls, Asni, and Moulay Ibrahim Valley, and the agricultural plateau on this exciting tour.

If you book this trip on Monday, you can also include a visit to the local souk in Ourika Valley and then on Saturdays in Asni for cultural authentic experience.
