Day Tour to Todra Gorge: Morocco’s Vertical Sanctuary

As you travel east from the lush valleys of central Morocco toward the golden dunes of the Sahara, the landscape suddenly fractures into one of the most dramatic natural wonders in Africa: Todra Gorge.

This limestone canyon, carved over millennia by the Todra and Dades rivers, features sheer rock walls that soar up to 400 meters high (taller than the Empire State Building). At its most famous point, the canyon narrows to a mere 10-meter-wide passage where the massive orange cliffs seem to block out the sun entirely.

A World-Class Climbing Destination

While many travelers simply stop for a quick photo, Todra Gorge is globally renowned among the rock-climbing community.

The Routes: There are over 400 bolted routes ranging from beginner-friendly 4th grades to expert 8c challenges.

The Texture: The reddish limestone is famous for its "sticky" friction and sharp pockets, making it a dream for sport climbers.

Accessibility: Many of the best sectors are right off the main road, allowing you to walk from your guesthouse straight to the rock face.

Hiking the "Nomad Loop"

If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, the Nomad Loop is the quintessential Todra experience. This 3-to-4-hour trek takes you out of the canyon floor and up into the surrounding plateau.

The Views: You’ll get a bird’s-eye perspective of the gorge that most tourists miss.

Cultural Encounters: The trail passes through areas inhabited by nomadic Berber families. It is not uncommon to be invited for a glass of mint tea in a traditional cave dwelling or tent.

The Descent: The trail winds back down through the lush Tinghir Palm Grove, a 14km oasis filled with date palms, pomegranate trees, and ancient mud-brick ksours (fortified villages).

The "Golden Hour": Visit the narrowest part of the gorge before 10:00 AM. This is when the morning sun hits the limestone, turning the walls a fiery, glowing orange.

Best Season: Aim for Spring (March–May) or Autumn (September–November). The weather is mild, perfect for physical activity. Winter nights can drop below freezing, while Summer temperatures often exceed 40°C.

Stay Local: While many visit on a day trip from Ouarzazate, staying overnight in a riverside auberge allows you to experience the canyon's silence after the tour buses depart.

Program:

Pick up from your hotel in Ouarzazate at 8:30 AM and head to Skoura Oasis via the road known as the Thousand Kasbahs. It is called this because it is lined with many crumbling kasbahs that we will view along the way. We will visit one of them in Skoura, called Kasbah Amerhidil. This kasbah is well known and recognized in Morocco, as it is featured on Moroccan currency.

Our route then takes us to the Valley of Roses, where you can see and possibly sample the locally produced rose cosmetics, which are highly prized in Morocco. We will travel through many small villages and green oases that create a paradise for any photographer until we reach Todra Gorge.

The walls of the gorge are carved into the mountains, reaching up to 300 meters high, and at their narrowest point are only 20 meters apart. Many local Berber people can often be seen in the gorge. There is a possibility of a short trek in the area before returning to Ouarzazate.
