Ifrane & the Lake District: Morocco’s "Little Switzerland"

If you were blindfolded and dropped into the center of Ifrane, you might wake up convinced you were in the Swiss Alps or a Bavarian village. Located high in the Middle Atlas Mountains at an elevation of 1,665 meters, Ifrane is a startling departure from the typical Moroccan aesthetic of red dust and arched medinas.

Known for its clean air, sloped red-tiled roofs, and flower-lined streets, Ifrane was built by the French in the 1920s as a "garden city" and "hill station." Today, it serves as a playground for the Moroccan elite and a sanctuary for nature lovers.

The Guardian of the City: The Stone Lion

No visit to Ifrane is complete without a photo of the Lion of Ifrane. Carved by a German soldier during World War II, this massive stone sculpture commemorates the last wild Atlas lion, which was killed in the nearby mountains around 1922. It stands as a symbol of the wild, rugged spirit that still exists just outside the town’s manicured borders.

The Lake District: Dayet Aoua and Beyond

Just outside the city lies the Lake District, a series of high-altitude "dayets" (lakes) that offer some of the most serene landscapes in North Africa.

Dayet Aoua: The most famous of the lakes, surrounded by a forest of Atlas cedars and weeping willows. It’s a perfect spot for birdwatching, horseback riding, or simply walking the 5km perimeter.

Dayet Ifrah: A larger, more secluded lake that feels wilder and more remote—ideal for those looking to escape the weekend crowds.

The Reflection: On a calm day, these lakes act as giant mirrors for the surrounding limestone cliffs and ancient forests.

The Cedar Guraud Forest and Barbary Macaques

A short drive from Ifrane takes you into the Cèdre Gouraud Forest, home to some of the oldest and tallest cedar trees in the world.

This is also the best place to meet the Barbary Macaques. These endangered monkeys are quite friendly (and bold!), often hanging out near the roadside. While they are a joy to watch, remember to keep your distance and avoid feeding them to help preserve their natural behavior.

A Year-Round Destination

Ifrane is one of the few places in Morocco where you truly experience four distinct seasons:

Winter: The town transforms into a snowy wonderland. Nearby, Michlifen is a boutique ski resort where you can hit the slopes in the morning and be back in town for a hot chocolate by the fire.

Spring & Summer: While the plains of Morocco bake in the heat, Ifrane remains cool and green, making it the ultimate summer retreat.

Autumn: The deciduous trees brought in from Europe turn brilliant shades of gold and orange, a rare sight in Africa.

Program:

Depart in the morning from your hotel/riad to the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop will be the French-built hill station of Du Kandar, perched on the limestone edge. Here, visit the crumbling Kasbah of Ait Seghrouchen and the still inhabited troglodyte homes.

Close by, also visit the volcanic freshwater lake of Dayet Aaoua. Depends on the time of the year, but this limestone area is home to many birds and other fauna. Your trip follows the road through the cedar forested hillsides of Ifrane. A popular site for winter skiing, resembling a Swiss village.

The next stop will be the real town of Azrou, a name that means "rock," and seeing the volcanic outcrop just outside the village, we understand why. Azrou is famous for its fine woodwork and gorgeous red carpets. Spend some time in this traditional Amazigh Berber green-tiled-roofed market square village before returning to Fes.
