Lalla Takerkoust: The Sapphire Mirror of the Atlas
Just a 45-minute drive from the frantic energy of Marrakech lies a startling blue contrast to the city’s dusty ochre walls. Lalla Takerkoust is a man-made lake, created in the 1920s to provide electricity and irrigation to the Haouz plain, but it has evolved into the "Marrakech Riviera"—a serene sanctuary for those looking to breathe.
What makes this spot truly magical is its backdrop. On a clear day, the deep sapphire water is framed by the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains, creating a landscape that looks more like the Swiss Alps than the gateway to the Sahara.
Adrenaline on Water and Land
Lalla Takerkoust is the primary hub for outdoor activities in the Marrakech region. It offers a perfect playground for those who want to mix relaxation with a bit of a heart-rate spike:
On the Water: You can rent jet skis, go paddleboarding, or take a peaceful kayak trip across the seven-kilometer expanse of the lake.
On the Shore: The rugged, arid hills surrounding the lake are a prime destination for Quad Biking and Buggy tours. The terrain here is varied, offering rocky climbs and sandy stretches that overlook the water.
In the Air: For the ultimate view, many travelers head to the nearby hills for paragliding, soaring over the dam and the vast Agafay Desert.
The "Beach Club" Experience
The lake’s shoreline is dotted with a variety of "Plages" or lakeside clubs. These range from rustic, traditional Moroccan restaurants to chic, upscale beach clubs like Le Relais du Lac or The Selman.
Day Passes: Most clubs offer a day pass that includes lunch and access to a swimming pool. It is the perfect way to enjoy the "lake vibes" while still having the luxury of a sun lounger and a glass of chilled Moroccan gris (rosé).
Dining: Expect fresh, seasonal tagines and grilled meats, often served on terraces that offer 180-degree views of the Atlas range.
The Gateway to the Agafay Desert
Lalla Takerkoust sits right on the edge of the Agafay Desert. Unlike the sandy dunes of Merzouga, Agafay is a "stone desert" of rolling moon-like hills. Many visitors combine a morning of water sports at the lake with a sunset camel ride or a luxury "glamping" dinner in the Agafay dunes just a few kilometers away.
Travel Tip
If you are visiting in Winter (December–February), the lake is at its most beautiful. The contrast between the blue water and the heavy snow on the mountains is at its peak, though it may be a bit too chilly for a swim!
Program:
Departure from Marrakech to the dam of Lalla Takerkoust to admire the beautiful adobe buildings. We climb the mountains to see the hidden Berber villages at a height of 1350 meters. We reach the splendid plateau of Kik, rich with olive groves.
A break for lunch (picnic). After we descend into the valley of Asni with its diversity of landscape through the throats of Moulay Brahim and the route of the High Atlas.
Asni Valley stands against the whiteness of the highest peak of the Atlas. It deploys the beauty and the purity of nature, still with a big untouched part, and offers a good peace for the mind after the tumult of the red city.
You will enjoy a nice typical Moroccan dinner in a nice Resturant. Afterwards, we get back to the Red City (Marrakech).
