Marrakech Medina: A Journey Through Time and Luxury
If Marrakech is the "Red City," its Medina is the beating heart that pumps life through its terracotta veins. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this medieval labyrinth is more than just a marketplace—it is a living museum of Islamic architecture, where humble alleyways suddenly open into the staggering opulence of imperial palaces.
The Crown Jewels: Bahia and El Badi
To understand the "Palace Life" of old Morocco, you must visit the two titans of the southern Medina:
Bahia Palace: Built in the late 19th century, "The Brilliance" was intended to be the greatest palace of its time. It is a masterpiece of Zellij tilework, carved cedar ceilings, and stained-glass windows. Walking through its vast "Court of Honour," you feel the intended tranquility of the Grand Vizier’s private harem and reception halls.
El Badi Palace: Once known as "The Incomparable," this 16th-century Saadian ruin offers a different kind of beauty. Though stripped of its gold and turquoise long ago, its massive sunken orange groves and towering mud-brick walls—where storks now nest—give a haunting sense of the scale and power of ancient Moroccan dynasties.
Hidden Gems and Sacred Spaces
Beyond the major monuments, the Medina hides smaller architectural marvels:
Ben Youssef Madrasa: Recently restored to its full glory, this 14th-century Islamic college features some of the most intricate stucco work and carved marble in North Africa.
Le Jardin Secret: A 19th-century palace complex that was meticulously restored to showcase two distinct garden styles: the exotic and the traditional Islamic "heaven on earth."
Navigating the Maze
The best way to experience the Medina is to accept that you will get lost. From the spice-scented air of Place des Épices to the rhythmic hammering in the blacksmiths' souk, every turn reveals a new layer of history.
Program:
Your guide would meet you at the lobby of your hotel/riad in Marrakech at 9:30 am and head towards the Djema El Fna square, from where we would take a foot exploration of the old town (medina). There are no cars allowed in this part of the city.
We will visit the highly decorated tombs of the royal family of the Saadian, the Ben Youssef medersa, the majestic ruins of the Baddi palace built by Ahmed El Mansour using the most precious materials such as onyx, gold, and marble traded for the weight of sugar, and the Bahia Palace. Then also visit the outside of Koutoubia mosque, the dominant mosque of Marrakech, and its minaret that watches over Marrakech for mover then 800 years.
