The Ourika Valley is an attractive string of villages along the river carrying the same name. The landscape is fresh and green, and in summer a popular destination when Marrakech is boiling.

If you need a break from the relentless heat and hustle of Marrakech, follow the local crowds toward the south. Just 30 kilometers from the city, the road begins to climb into the Ourika Valley. This lush, emerald-green canyon is the most accessible gateway to the High Atlas Mountains, offering a refreshing microclimate where the air is crisp, the water is ice-cold, and the life is vividly rural.

The Ourika Valley starts about 30 km south of Marrakech, and the tarmac road will slowly bring you 37 km into the valley until you reach Setti Fatma, famous for its seven waterfalls.

The main attraction of Aghbalou must be the brick mosque, a rare change from the standard mosque in Morocco. It has an appearance that resembles more of a church. Since Aghbalou is the largest village along the Oued Ourika, it is also a popular place to stop en route. A popular place to pass an hour or two is the nice café along the river. Extremely basic, with an uneven ground, but the food is surprisingly good.

While it is a popular day-trip destination, Ourika’s true beauty lies in its layers—from the riverside cafes to the high-altitude Berber villages.

The Seven Waterfalls of Setti Fatma

The "end of the road" in the valley is the village of Setti Fatma. This is the starting point for the valley’s most famous hike: the trek to the seven waterfalls.

The Climb: The first waterfall is easily reachable via a 20-minute walk. However, if you want to escape the crowds, keep climbing! The third and fourth falls require a bit of scrambling over rocks, but the reward is a series of secluded natural pools where the water cascades down from the peaks.

The Guide: While the path to the first fall is clear, hiring a local guide for the higher reaches is highly recommended—they know the safest footholds and the best hidden viewpoints.

Riverside Dining: Feet in the Stream

One of the most iconic "Ourika" experiences is the lunch setup. Dozens of local restaurants place their tables and chairs directly into the shallow, rushing waters of the Ourika River.

The Menu: Expect the quintessential Berber Tagine—slow-cooked over charcoal with mountain vegetables and preserved lemons.

The Vibe: There is nothing quite like eating a hot, savory meal while the glacial runoff from the Atlas peaks swirls around your ankles. It is nature’s version of air conditioning.

More Than Just Scenery

The valley is a living museum of Berber (Amazigh) culture. As you drive through, you’ll see:

The Saffron Garden: A fascinating stop where you can learn about the "red gold" of Morocco and its medicinal properties.

Bio-Aromatic Gardens: Visit Nectarome, an organic garden where you can walk through fields of lavender, rosemary, and thyme, and see how essential oils are distilled.

Traditional Architecture: Look up at the mountainsides to see mud-brick villages that seem to hang precariously from the cliffs, some of which are hundreds of years old.

Pro-Tips for Your Visit

Go During the Week: Ourika is the favorite weekend escape for Marrakshi families. If you want a peaceful experience, visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Monday Market: If you can, visit on a Monday to see the Souk Tnine l’Ourika. It is a massive, authentic rural market where farmers from the high mountains bring their livestock and produce to trade.

Pack Layers: Even if it is 40°C in Marrakech, the valley can be significantly cooler, especially as the sun sets behind the peaks.
