Day 1: Fes – Midelt – Merzouga
Early morning pickup from your accommodation in Fes, as today is the longest day of travel. We will traverse a variety of incredible and ever-changing landscapes. First, we pass through the impressive cedar-forested hillsides of Azrou, where we may see Barbary apes. We then cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, where we might encounter nomads traveling with their herds.
The scenery changes again as we approach the palm oasis of the Ziz Valley, lined with countless palm trees all the way to Erfoud, the desert gateway. From here, it is approximately a one-hour drive to Merzouga, home to Morocco’s stunning Erg Chebbi dunes. Overnight near the dunes in a comfortable hotel. (B, D)
Day 2: Merzouga
After the long journey of the previous day, we will enjoy a relaxed exploration of the desert region. We will visit nearby areas, including Rissani, an ancient city where you may have the opportunity to visit the local souk, known for trading a wide variety of goods. Alternatively, we can visit Khamlia village to experience traditional Gnawa music, or you may choose to relax by the hotel pool.
In the late afternoon, before sunset—when the dunes are at their most spectacular—we saddle our camels and trek into the desert. Watch as the dunes change color from apricot to deep red and black. Overnight, either in desert tents at a desert oasis or at the hotel. (B, D)
Day 3: Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Gorge
Today we depart from Merzouga and head toward the beautiful Todra Gorge, one of the largest oases in Morocco. The towering walls of the gorge rise up to 300 meters. We will have time to admire the scenery before continuing to the Dades Gorge, which is famous for its winding, zigzagging roads. (B, D)
Day 4: Dades Gorge – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech
In the morning, we travel toward Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou, passing through the Rose Valley, known for the cultivation of Moroccan roses, and the Skoura Oasis. Upon arrival, we visit Ait Ben Haddou, the most famous kasbah in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, often featured in films and television productions.
We explore this remarkable site by walking through the streets of the old ksar before crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi Tichka Pass on our way to Marrakech.
