A Toubkal climb is one of Morocco’s most iconic adventure experiences, attracting trekkers from around the world who want to reach the highest peak in North Africa. Rising to 4,167 meters in the High Atlas Mountains, Mount Toubkal offers a challenging yet achievable ascent for anyone with good physical fitness and a love for mountain landscapes.
The journey usually begins in the picturesque village of Imlil, surrounded by terraced fields and traditional Berber homes. From here, the trail winds through scenic valleys, rocky paths, and mountain passes, offering stunning views at every turn. Along the way, climbers experience the hospitality of local Berber communities and gain insight into their simple, mountain-based way of life.
Most itineraries include an overnight stay at the Toubkal Refuge, where climbers rest before the early-morning summit attempt. The final ascent starts before sunrise, with headlamps lighting the path as the air grows thinner and cooler. Reaching the summit is a powerful moment, rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the High Atlas range and, on clear days, glimpses of the distant Sahara.
The descent back to Imlil allows time to fully appreciate the dramatic scenery and reflect on the achievement. A Toubkal climb is more than a physical challenge—it’s a journey through breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and personal accomplishment, making it an unforgettable highlight of any adventure in Morocco.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Marrakech - Imlil - Toubkal Refugee
Pick up early morning in Marrakech and direct transfer to Imlil. Here we meet with our guide and mules to take us on this adventure.
We walk to the Mizane Valley, passing the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Then, East crosses the flood plains and up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. From here, the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the Toukbal Refuge (3206m), our stop for the night.
Approx. 4 to 5 hours walking.
Day 2: Toubkal Summit - Marrakech
Early in the morning, we make our attemptto reach the summit of Toukbal. At first, we cross the stream above the refuge, then walk relatively straightforward. But the degree and the altitude will make the trek quite difficult in some parts. The views along the way will make it affordable.
When we reach the summit, we'll see across the surrounding landscape. From here, there are views in every direction, from the Marrakesh to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. We descend back to Imlil and transfer back to Marrakech.
