The Zagora Desert is one of Morocco’s most captivating gateways into the Sahara, offering travelers an authentic taste of desert life without venturing too far from the Atlas Mountains. Located in the Draa Valley, Zagora is famous for its dramatic landscapes, palm-filled oases, and centuries-old caravan routes that once connected North Africa with sub-Saharan trade centers.

What makes the Zagora Desert special is its blend of raw beauty and cultural depth. Unlike the vast dunes of Merzouga, Zagora presents a more rugged desert experience, where rocky plains meet rolling sand formations. The iconic sign reading “Zagora – Tombouctou 52 Days” reminds visitors of the region’s historic importance as a stopping point for camel caravans traveling across the Sahara.

A journey into the Zagora Desert often includes a camel trek at sunset, when the desert glows in shades of gold, amber, and soft pink. As night falls, the silence of the desert is broken only by the crackle of a campfire and the rhythmic beat of Berber drums. Spending the night in a traditional nomad tent under a sky filled with stars is an unforgettable experience, offering a deep sense of peace and connection to nature.

Beyond the dunes, the surrounding Draa Valley adds another layer of charm. Lined with date palms, ancient kasbahs, and small Berber villages, the valley showcases a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for generations. Visitors can explore local markets, meet desert communities, and discover the region’s rich traditions and hospitality.

Whether you are seeking adventure, cultural discovery, or quiet moments beneath the vast desert sky, the Zagora Desert offers a memorable journey into the heart of southern Morocco.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Marrakech – Zagora

Morning pickup from your hotel or riad at 8:00 am, followed by a journey toward the High Atlas Mountains. The Atlas Mountains dominate the landscape, and the drive across them is dramatic, offering many photography opportunities. Along the way, we will see numerous Berber villages, where homes are made of mud-brick and blend seamlessly into the surrounding mountains.

Our journey continues to Ait Ben Haddou, a historic ksar dating back to the 16th century and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The setting of this kasbah is spectacular, which explains why it has been chosen by many filmmakers for major productions such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and several others.

The journey then continues to Ouarzazate and Agdz, where we descend into the Draa Valley. This picturesque valley is lined with vast palm groves, mainly date palms, and small sub-Saharan villages. We then arrive in Zagora, where we begin our camel trek to a nomadic tented camp. Enjoy the night in traditional desert tents under the stars.

Overnight in tents with breakfast and dinner included.

Day 2: Zagora – Marrakech

Wake up early to greet the new day with a beautiful desert sunrise, followed by breakfast. Afterward, return by camel to meet your driver and begin the journey back to Marrakech. There will be plenty of time for photographs of the breathtaking scenery along the way, with possible stops at local markets if time permits.
